Jaguar Land Rover has been named the winner of this year’s Altair Enlighten Award for its innovative development and implementation of a new premium lightweight architecture. Using this architecture, the company was able to reduce CO2 and weight while maximizing the use of recycled materials and lowering energy consumption during manufacture. As a result, the new lightweight vehicle Range Rover body lost over 40% of its overall weight, going from 498 kg (1096 lbs) to 288 kg (658 lbs). New computer-aided engineering (CAE) techniques were developed in conjunction with the project for crash, durability, noise, vibration, and harshness simulation and analysis.
“Jaguar Land Rover’s holistic approach to vehicle lightweighting and CO2 reduction has yielded an aggressive and highly impressive methodology that is enabling the creation of new and exciting vehicle architectures,” commented David Mason, Vice President, Global Automotive for Altair.
Notably, Dow Automotive Systems was awarded a runner-up prize for its BETAMATE™ bonding solution and application on Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks. The solution achieved a weight reduction of 9 kg (20 lbs) in truck cabins and reduced costs.
“This year’s entries demonstrated a wide range of innovative solutions to meet the weight reduction challenges of modern automotive design,” said judging chair Dr. Jay Baron, President and CEO of CAR, and director of CAR’s Coalition for Automotive Lightweighting Materials. “Jaguar Land Rover, Dow Automotive Systems and all our 2014 nominees are contributing to reductions in weight, fuel consumption, and emissions. The Enlighten Award is an excellent way to highlight these achievements.”
Altair honored Jaguar Land Rover and Dow Automotive Systems with the awards during the Featherweight Competition: Agile, Light, and Strong session yesterday afternoon. Congratulations to both companies for a job well done! For information on requirements for the 2015 Altair Enlighten Award, please contact email@example.com.
